Course objectives

This course aims to familiarize undergraduates with the development of the relationship of state bodies to church institutions within the Habsburg monarchy. It deals with the search for a way to incorporate ecclesiastical institutions into the new, modern form of the state, deliberations over how to use or not use the bodies of the church to strengthen and modernize the apparatus of the state. It includes familiarization with individuals who created both the political and cultural background for all the discussions and administrative adaptations.

• The development of the relationship of state bodies to church institutions within the Habsburg monarchy.
• The search for a way to incorporate ecclesiastical institutions into the new, modern form of the state.
• How to use or not use the bodies of the church to strengthen and modernize the apparatus of the state.
