Course objectives
The course is designed as a follow-up course after Arabic Level I, students develop a strong foundation in understanding modern standard Arabic in both its written and spoken forms. Written and oral production is developed as well. At the end of the term students will: - (in the listening skill) be able to comprehend simple audio texts on familiar topics, grasp meaning of a short passage and understand simple one-to-one conversation; - (in the speaking skill) be able to express themselves and participate in simple social interactions (introduction, home and family issues, work, study, travelling, leisure time, health etc.); - (in the reading skill) be able to read and comprehend Arabic materials of limited complexity and limited range of topics, comprehend simple descriptions, narratives dealing with personal and social needs; - (in the writing skill) be able to produce simple notes, messages, letters and personal experiences, to fill in information on basic simple forms (hotel registration, travel documents etc.), compose simple paragraphs about themselves; - acquire adequate vocabulary and grammar structures to develop the ability to use the language in real-world (authentic) situations

Teaching methods
The course is based on post-method (eclectic) language teaching methodology which uses parts of various teaching methods and combines them in order to achieve effective results) It utilizes lectures, language exercises (filling in gaps, matching, translation exercises, transformation exercise etc.), and above all communicative language activities.
Assessment methods
Continuous written tests whose format uses various item types (gap filling, multiple choice, matching, information transfer, short answer questions and translation from Czech to Arabic and vice versa) are used throughout the term. Class attendance is not required during the term but the students are strongly recommended to do so. They should participate actively in class work and fulfil their home assignments. Final test at the end of the spring term is into two parts: a written test and an oral test. The former measures acquired level of language proficiency in Arabic in 3 skills (listening, reading and writing) plus in language in use (grammar and vocabulary). Passmark – 60%. The latter is in the form of an interview and is based on interaction between examiner and examinee.
