Course objectives
The course introduces the basic outlets and practical perspective into the field of forensic psychology. It is generally focused on psychologist’s employment in security corps (police, fire department, custom house, prison employment) with specific demands and risks.
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychology and law. Subjekt of forensic psychology. The fields of forensic psychology: crime psychology, criminological psychology, juridical psychology, penitentiary psychology, postpenitentiary psychology, forencis psychological personnel management, police psychology, penology
  • 2. Outline of the historical development and formation of forensic psychology.
  • 3. Prison service in Czech Rep., formation and system (basic data). Tasks of prison service, organization and devision. Prison types. Function of psychologist in prison service and job desciption.
  • 4. Presentation of Brno Remand prison. Profilation of the prison and capability.
  • 5. Function of prison service member in Czech Rep. Prerequisites for recruitment in VSČR, increased psychological stress at work, risk of post-traumatic stress reactions, professional burnout syndrome.
  • 6. Penitentiary psychology. Problems of adaptation, psychological and social consequences of custody and execution of a punishment
  • 7. Forms of agression in penitentiary environment.
  • 8. Penitentiary – psychological issues of mass lack of discipline and prison riots. Causes of rebellion emergence, stages of prisoners rebellion.
  • 9. Penitentiary psychopathology. Prisonization and the prisoner’s second life, suicide and self-mutilation.
  • 10. Optimizing custody and execution of a imprisonment punishment in Czech Rep. Custody as a psychosocial problem. Function of imprisonment punishment. Treating the sentenced.
  • 11. Empirical profiles of criminals. Deceives and deceivers, contract murderers, perpetrators of sexual abuse of children, perpetrators of serial violence, perpetrators of phone terror, perpetrators of theft in department stores
  • 12. New phenomenon of Czech prison service. Organized crime – basic characteristics, organized crime in Czech Republic, various forms of organized crime, possible ways to eliminate the negative effect of criminal structures in prison service (technical security, organization, facilities for prison staff). Russian speaking foreigners in czech prisons.
  • 13. Penitentiary problems of drug abuse. Risk of aggressive conduct under the influence of drugs, existence of black market drugs in prisons, exploitation doctor's surgery, risk of disease transmission, activity of drug prevention counseling.

This course is completed with written test which results from study materials, lectures and semminars. Specific information to the type of the finalization will be specified by teacher at the begining of the semester.
