Course objectives

The main objectives of the course is the knowledge of translating and interpreting Latin medieval texts which deal - in various ways - with the last things of the man (heaven, hell, purgatory, Antichrist etc.) and have a various form of genre.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, student will be able to: - have an orientation in basic Latin wordlist of the eschatological texts - indentify specifics of particular texts - visions, prechings, tracts etc. - coherently translate this typ of texts - interpretate original Latin texts in relation to the contemporary context

Syllabus

• I. Introduction to the translation and interpretation of medieval eschatological texts II. Translation and interpretation of the selected texts: Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis; Otlohus Ratisbonensis (visio); Sibylla Tiburtina; Nicolaus de Dresda: De purgatorio; De periculis novissimorum temporum; Otto Frisingensis: De duabus civitatibus (the passages about the Antichrist)
