Course objectives
Slovene literature of the 19th century. The cultural and historical context. Slovene Romanticism and European influences. France Prešeren. Slovene literature between Romanticism and Realism in the second half of the 19th century. Main literal programs and the cultural changes, quick development of prose, poetry and drama in the second part of the 19th century. National ideas in literature. The most prominent representatives of the Slovene literature of Modernism. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the analysis of relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of Slovene literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • 1. The history and culture of Slovenian lands in the 19th century.
  • 2. Main characteristics of Romanticism. The influences from Europe. The German philosophy of that time and her influence on Slovenes.
  • 3.-4. France Prešeren and his poetry. Matija Čop as the first Slovene literal scientist. The year 1948.
  • 5. The second part of the 19th century: Slovene literature between realism and romantic ideas. So-called vajevci. Janez Trdina.
  • 6. Fran Levstik and his literature program.
  • 7. Simon Jenko and the development of Slovene poetry.
  • 8. Janko Kersnik and the development of Slovene prose.
  • 9. Two concepts of Slovene prose writings.
  • 10. The beginning of Slovene drama and theatre. Fran Levstik and Josip Jurčič and their Tugomer.
  • 11. The literal concepts at the end of the 19th century. Ivan Tavčar and Josip Stritar. Vienna circle.
  • 12. Anton Aškerc and his influence to the new generation. Czech-Slovene cultural contacts.

Lectures and seminars; class discussions, seminar paper, compulsory home reading.
Assessment methods
Attendance (two absences are allowed), home reading, homeworks. Assessment: presentation of two seminar papers (20 points), written test (80 points). Evaluation scale: A 100–85, B 84–80, C 79–75, D 74–70, E 69–60, F (fail) 59–0.
