Course objectives
The course is devoted to reading texts from literary theory and literary criticism (texts relating to the poetics of literary work) and to their use for work with artistic literature. Selected texts of different provenance and times are used, the emphasis is on modern times and Czech literature in a cultural context. The course is based on continuous work with texts and their fragments.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able
• to work with academic texts dedicated to the poetics of literary work;
• to use theoretical texts to interpret artistic literature from different periods;
• to evaluate scholarly interpretations of artistic literature;
• to orientate themselves in the works of literary theory of literary criticism;
• to use the knowledge gained in writing their own works.
Syllabus
  • Interpretation of important concepts from literary theory and literary history.
  • • Interpretation of selected theoretical texts.
  • • Use of theoretical texts in the interpretation of selected titles of artistic literature.
  • • In the seminar part of the course the acquired knowledge will be applied in common readings, presentations, discussions.

Teaching methods
The course combines lectures and seminars. It comprises homework, reading of the given text, writing and presentation of the seminar paper, a common reflection of the topic, class discussion
Assessment methods
An active approach to the course topic, writing of a seminar paper, passing the colloquim.
