Course objectives
The course will cover the main tendencies in the development of European literature, from the end of WWII to modern day. Literature will not be understood as an aesthetic phenomenon that can be examined primarily by means of philology. Literature, as represented by these lectures, is an art form that finds itself under the ever-growing influence of film (the establishment of film studies at universities); changes in political and social sphere (postmodernism), changes in the identities of certain parts of society (feminism, post-colonialism), as well as the “crisis” of aesthetic values (postmodernism) and the influence of the “new media” (Internet, digital media) The lectures aim to elaborate on the main tendencies in the development of Czech literature post-1945, in the broader frame of the history of world literatures. They will also reflect on intermedia relationships between literature, visual arts, film, etc.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- understand the development of (Czech) literature on the background of social and cultural changes,
- understand the intermedia connections between Czech literature and other art forms,

- utilise the acquired knowledge in further studies of the differences between literary text and its film (musical and other) adaptation.
