Course objectives
The course is outlined as a second part of two-semester lecture that aims at capturing the most important developmental phases of world theatre and drama. The lecture will focus on some historic and style epochs (the Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, Theatre of the Absurd, off-off theatre etc.) as well as principal works and personalities of world drama and theatre, including selections from their work (Moliere, J. W. Goethe, K. S. Stanislavskij, B. Brecht, S. Beckett, P. Brook...).
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to take bearings in the theatre history and to analyse and interpret the most important dramatic works.

  • 2. ROMANTISM - Pre-Romantic movements (Sturm und Drang), Germany (Grabbe, Kleist, Büchner…), France (Hugo, de Musset, Mérimée)
  • 3. SYMBOLISM AND THE MODERN (Théâtre d'Art, Théâtre de l'Oeuvre, Paul Fort, Lugné-Poë, Alfréd Jarry)
  • 4. REALISM (Stanislavskij) ABSURD THEATER (Beckett, Ionesco, Pinter)
  • 5. POLITICAL THEATER IN THE XX. CENTURY (B. Brecht, E. Piscator)
