Course objectives
The course is focused on the changes in ethical values during Hellenistic period ("globalization", individualization, equality of men), during the crisis of the Roman Empire (introduction of oriental cults) and the Dominate(antiuity and Christianity); it presents the value system of the “barbarians” meeting Rome.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will:
- be able to describe the changes in ethical values in the periods apart from the classical ancient world;
- be able to assess the significance of the periods formerly decadent;
- be able to search for the implicit information on ethics in ancient sources;
- be able to answer the question whether we find ourselves to be in a similar situation as late Romans.
Syllabus
  • 1) Ideological shifts during Hellenistic period; the influence of the anthropocentric philosophies, oriental thinking, and religion.
  • 2) The conception of values and man in Hellenistic world; the real status of upper and lower classes.
  • 3) Hellenistic ways to monotheism.
  • 4) The decline of ancient civil society during Hellenism and its consequences.
  • 5) Hellenization and later “orientalization” of Roman society and thinking; putting Roman absolutism into a broader historical context.
  • 6) The values of "res publica", "civilitas", and "libertas" in Late Antiquity; their reflection in written sources; the shift in the lifestyle of the majority of Roman population.
  • 7) The emperor and his conception in late Roman society; the divinity of emperor as a value; the decline of the values of citizenship.
  • 8) The clash of the old Roman religion and the spreading Christianity.
  • 9) Collectivism and individualism in the life of ancient society. Patriotism and globalization.
  • 10) Roman art of integration, integration as a value.
  • 11) Life values of the "barbarians" according to the authors of the Principate.
  • 12) Life values of the "barbarians" during the Great Migration; preserved and lost ancient life values.
