Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic problems, characters, events and currents in the "religious" history of Poland. The main focus will be on the relationship between religion and the political and cultural identity of the Polish nation.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:

  • to identify the main trends of religiosity in Polish society;
  • critically reflect the key features of the relationship of Polish society to religion and selected religious groups;
  • describe and explain and critically reflect some specific features of Polish religiosity (eg so-called Polish religious nationalism atheism)

    • Christianization of Poland and the beginnings of "Catholic identity" of Poland; Religious plurality in early modern Poland I - Catholic, Greek-Catholic and Orthodox Church; Religious plurality in early modern Poland II - Protestant denomination; Poland as the center of Ashkenazi Judaism I: Poland-Jewish relations in centuries (Middle Ages); Poland as the center of Ashkenazi Judaism II: Poland-Jewish relations in the centuries (Modern Times); Catholicism and nationalism as fundamental factors in making modern Polish political identity; Catholic Church in the Nazi and Communist regime; Between Catholic ultraconservatism and secular liberalism: Religion and Polish society in the late 20th and early 21st century; Important sacral places in Poland.
