Course objectives

The aim of the course is to check whether students themselves are able to translate and interpret one selected comedy by Aristophanes.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students:
- should be able to translate one selected drama of Aristophanes in a correct way;
- understand the literary and historical context, on the basis of which they are able to interpret the piece;
- moreover, they are also well informed about the metres of the Greek comedy;
- know and use the later explanatory comments and commentaries (scholia).

Syllabus

• Reading and translating one comedy of Aristophanes (the students choose on the basis of their individual interests).
• Use of dictionaries, commentaries and grammar books.
• Linguistic analysis of the text.
• Historical background of the work.

Teaching methods

The course is not being taught in the standard form, but through the consultations during which the students solve the actual problems and answer questions concerning the text prescribed for translation.

Assessment methods

The knowledge of the texts is tested by translating selected passages into Czech and commenting on their linguistic features and historical and social context. The examination is oral, students have time for preparing the translation. Examination takes place in the examination period as well as during the semester (in the latter case, it is necessary to make appointment personally or by e-mail).
