Course objectives
The course combines the Czech and Anglo-American stylistics traditions. The objective is to make students understand the functional interpretation and construction of texts of both literary and non-literary character, and to distinguish a number of stylistic devices used in a number of different registers (e.g. register of newspapers and magazines, advertising, face-to-face interaction, comics etc.).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: - understand the key concepts and definitions in stylistics; - distinguish different registers - recognize different linguistic patterns used as stylistic devices; - applying register anlysis on non-literary texts; - applying genre analysis on literary texts.

Teaching methods
Practical seminars. Required pre-class readings. Seminars - discussion and text analysis.
Assessment methods
Assessment: attendance+narrative+entries to glossary = maximum 40 points; final test = maximum 60 points. To pass the course, the final test must be above 60 % and the overall score must be above 70 %.
