Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide students with deeper knowledge of the Akkadian language in its classical, Old Babylonian stage. Students will learn more grammar and vocabulary and read more difficult Akkadian legal, historical and epistolary texts.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student will:
- have deeper knowledge of cuneiform script, Akkadian grammar, selected texts and their historical as well as cultural context;
- further develop his/her abilities to work with complex sign systems, discuss and interpret them
Syllabus
  • 1. Akkadian morphology: cohortative, precative, prohibitive and vetitive, affirmative, derived verbal stems, categories of meaning for verbs, stems with the -tan- infix, weak verbs, irregular verbs, numerals, adverbs.
  • 2. Akkadian syntax: the predicative construction, other subordinate clauses, syntax of the infinitive.
  • 3. Text reading from cuneiform.
