Course objectives
This series of lectures and seminars is based on methods of Latin paleography and epigraphy and aims to provide students with a basic overview of the development of Latin script in the modern period, i.e. from the 16th to the 20th century. For this period of history, students should become familiar with: a) the typology and dating of Latin scripts from books, charters and inscriptions in the period of neo-Gothic and humanist scripts; b) the paleographic characteristics of individual script types of this era; c) paleographic analysis and comparison; d) the transcription modern Latin texts; e) an overview of basic literature and editions, including the history of research on the Latin script of this period.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- apply their knowledge of the development of script from the 16th to the 20th century to specific sources;
- transcribe and prepare selected original Latin, German and Czech texts from the period 1500–2000 for a critical edition;
- read and analyse original Latin, German and Czech texts (inscriptions, books and documents) from the period 1500-2000.
