Course objectives
Lecture on so-called normalization period in Czech and Slovak cinema (1970-1989).
The aim of the course is to bring the historical and ideological background of this period and its mentality closer.
The subject matter of the research will be official works made on the basis of so-called society-driven demand, films with alternative or polemical charge, but also films for children and youth, genre production and documentaries.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will have been able to:
- orientate themselves in the political background of normalization cinema,
- analyze ideological elements explicitly or implicitly present in normalization films,
- lead interviews with old-timers and work with oral history,
- discuss the methodological issues of contemporary history research.

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussion, film screenings, homework, research.
A section of the contact lectures will be oriented on distant study programme students. This part will be devoted to the introduction to the topic and selected topics that are not supported by the obligatory and recommended literature.
Assessment methods
Two tasks must be completed to obtain a rating: 1) To pass a short knowledge test. 2) To write an essay, or conduct an interview with an witness as a narrator.
