Course objectives
This course meets three times a week and is designed to be both engaging and comprehensive. The first two sessions (KSCA010/OS01) focus on essential vocabulary and grammar, with all students attending together. During these sessions, the instructor will explain new words and grammatical concepts, followed by interactive classroom practice and lively discussions. Students will engage in extensive dialogue practice in small groups of 2-3 people, making the learning process dynamic and collaborative.
The third session (KSCA010/01-04) of the week is divided into smaller groups, where the teaching assistant will guide practice and review the material covered in the first two sessions. This smaller group setting allows for personalized attention and targeted feedback, helping students to reinforce their understanding and improve their speaking skills.
The course is conducted entirely in Chinese. To enhance the learning experience, students are encouraged to read the textbook and review the slides in detail before each class. This preparation will enable them to participate actively and get the most out of the interactive sessions. The course includes assignments and exams to track progress and ensure comprehension.
We use HSK4 as our textbook, which is the final spoken Chinese textbook in the HSK series. From HSK5 onward, the focus shifts to written Chinese. Therefore, this course is a crucial stage for mastering spoken Chinese. Through extensive in-class dialogue practice, students will learn to recognize various Chinese language contexts and master the grammatical usage within these contexts. They will also practice applying multiple grammatical structures in the same context, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired advanced speaking skills that can be applied in daily life, travel, work, and natural conversations. This course aims to build confidence and fluency, preparing students for real-world communication in Chinese.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- understand the main points of speech on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc.;
- understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency words or job-related language;
- deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken;
- enter a conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events);
- present clear and detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to his/her own field of interest;
- explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options;
- recognize contexts and apply correct grammars.
