Course objectives

The aim of the course is to complete and submit a Master's degree diploma thesis of at least 140,000 characters, in electronic version.

Learning outcomes

The student is able:
- to propose the thesis table of contents;
- to search and compare the relevant primary and secondary sources;
- to analyze the issue under study;
- to write the chapters of the thesis;
- to apply the metodology of writing the diploma thesis: synopsis, introduction, methods of text analysis, argumentation and conclusion;
- to summarize the topic in one chosen foreign language (French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish).

Syllabus

• The nature of the syllabus depends on the topic of the M. A. Diploma Thesis.
• It usually includes:
• - searching for the literature; searching in the sources;
• - treatment of the constituent problems;
• - formulation of individual chapters;
• - treatment of the notes and supplements; list of the literature and sources.
• A summary in one chosen foreign language (French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Arabic) is obligatory.

Teaching methods

Individual tutorial. Examination of the plan of the thesis structure, introduction and methodology. Examination of particular analysis and conclusions.

Assessment methods

The student selects the theme of his thesis based on the consultation of his supervisor. He attends the Major B.A. Thesis seminar and consults his work with the supervisor. Regular consultations with the supervisor and the submission of the thesis to the IS drop-off room (in this subject) and to the IS final thesis archive are the requirements for the assignment. They must be identical versions. If the thesis is not judged to be of sufficient quality, it will not be accepted by the department and therefore no credit will be awarded. In this case, the student will have to withdraw the thesis from the archive and revise it.

Teacher's information

The topic of the master's thesis must be registered in the IS MU via the "Student timetables" agenda. The list of currently available topics is listed in the "Master's Thesis: Mediterranean Studies" schedule. If a student is not satisfied with any of the listed topics, he/she can contact individual lecturers depending on whether he/she would like to deal with literature, language or history. Together they will find a suitable topic. The literature search is part of the diploma assignment. Other literature may be assigned by the teacher depending on the nature and topic of the thesis. It is advisable to address the choice of thesis topic well (ideally more than a year) in advance of the planned graduation and to set aside a sufficient amount of time (i.e., more than the last semester of study) to work on the thesis. The thesis is submitted to the thesis archive in the IS MU and to the submission room. Deadlines for submission of the Master's thesis: 15 December, 15 May, 30 June, depending on which exam date the student chooses. The timetable for the selection of the topic and submission of the thesis binding for the whole faculty is given on the Faculty of Arts website. If the thesis is considered acceptable for defence, the thesis will be accepted and published. Subsequently, the supervisor's and opponent's evaluations will be placed in the thesis archive. The student will read them and prepare a brief presentation of the thesis (max. 10 min.) and a response to the criticisms contained in both opinions. He/she will make notes on the defence in written form.
