Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will have basic idea of the structure of Spanish vocabulary from the point of view of external linguistics. Attention will be paid to loanwords and contacts with other languages.
Learning outcomes
Students get basic knowledge about external history of the Spanish lexikon, mainly about loanwords and about contacts Spanish has had with other languages in various stages of its evolution.

  • 1. Approaching diachrony of a language. Internal linguistics. External linguistics.
  • 2. Preroman vocabulary.
  • 3. Latin in Spanish.
  • 4. Visigotic loans.
  • 5. Arabian vocabulary.
  • 6. Loanwords from indigenous languages of America.
  • 7. Contact with peninsular Romance languages: Catalan, Portuguese.
  • 8. Contact wit extra-peninsular Romance languages: French, Italian
  • 9. English in modern Spanish.

Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms of diachronich lexicology and their exemplification on different of specific texts from different periods.
Seminar: discussion based on assigned texts and fragments
