Abstract
The aim of this course is to develop students' practical skills and to enhance their competencies of translation from English into Czech via a training of methods to be used when translating various types of texts and using specific tools.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
- effectively use corpuses, databases and dictionaries in translation;
- use subtitling software to translate film subtitles;
- know the specifics of theatre translation;
- consider the benefits and risks of working as a literary translator;
- evaluate the success of translation decisions in terms of their functionality;
- analyze the possibilities of using translation in foreign language acquisition;
- use the peer evaluation method.

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
6 workshops 4*45 minutes. Each workshop is going to consist of 3 basic parts: the instructor's lecture (intro into the topic); discussion; hands-on training.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements (in Czech)
Predmetom hodnotenia bude komentovaný preklad vybraného textu, kde študentstvo preukáže získané vedomosti a zručnosti. Komentovaný preklad má podobu seminárnej práce. Študenti si môžu zvoliť z vopred vybraných textov, ktoré im poskytne vyučujúci, a seminárnu prácu vypracujú v skupinách.

Předmět bude vyučován hostující vyučující dr. Barborou Vinczeovou (Katedra anglistiky a amerikanistiky, Filozofická fakulta, Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici).  Výuka bude probíhat od 2. do 25. 3. 2026, a to 3x týdně:  PO 14-15.40 (D33), ÚT 10-11.40 (L31), ST 12-13.40 (B2.41) (týden 10, 11, 12, 13).
