Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the cell and molecular biology of Protists. This information will be presented in the context of more studied groups of organisms (plants and animals) and will include discussion on the origin of eukaryotes and the most important evolutionary events that have shaped them. In a brief overview, students will be introduced to the basic characteristics and representatives of the main lines of eukaryotes. Using examples of free-living aerobic, anaerobic, autotrophic, and parasitic model protists, the course will demonstrate the peculiarities of their cell biology, often arising from adaptations to specific life strategies, differences from generally accepted models based on the study of multicellular eukaryotes, and the details/peculiarities of the methodology used in the study of protist cell biology.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the course will become familiar with the current perspective on the origin of eukaryotes and the most significant evolutionary events that shaped them. They will learn a basic characterization and representatives of the main lines of eukaryotes. Through examples of free-living aerobic, anaerobic, autotrophic, and parasitic model protists, they will understand the peculiarities of their cell biology, often resulting from adaptations to specific life strategies, differences from generally accepted models based on the study of multicellular eukaryotes, and details/peculiarities of methodologies in the study of protist cell biology.

Teaching methods
Lectures with discussion; self-study of provided materials.

Written exam – students will elaborate on 20 open-ended questions covering the discussed topics.
