- Course objectives
- The students are in detail acquainted with principles of electron microscopy and microanalysis. The applicability of electron microscopical and microanalytical methods in the basic research as well as in practical applications in geological survey and ore treatment or environment monitoring is demonstrated on typical case studies.
- Syllabus
- History a present state of electron microscopy and microanalysis Scanning elecron micoscope Scheme, specimen preparation, sample coating, imaging modes (secondary electron images, backscattered electron images) and their use in solving specific problems in geosciences. Electron microanalysis Detection systems - principles, instrumental arrangement. Energy-dispersive analysis - solution of line coincidences, spectrum deconvolution. Wavelength dispersive analysis - crystals, correction programs. Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of ED and WD analysis. Specific geological problems solvable by electron microanalysis. Novel methods in electron microscopy and microanalysisElectron microscope with variable vacuum (ESEM), structural analysis by EBSD.
