Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the basic theory of thematic cartography, composition skeleton and structure thematical maps, use principles of legend making, making and use thematic maps and atlases.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- understand the basic theory of thematic cartography;
- apply the basic principles of map composition;
- evaluate the structure of thematical maps;
- use the basic principles of legend-making;
- create and use thematic maps and atlases.

  • Lectures: 1. Definition of thematical map, different groups of thematical maps 2. Mandatory nad optional parts of thematical maps 3. Content of thematical maps 4. Scales 5. Quantum GIS - basic functions 6. Quantitative and qualitative data in thematical maps 7. Quantitative data displaying 8. Map concepts - purpose, name, and content of thematical maps 9. Construction of different thematical map types 10. Legend of the map, its principles, and creation 11. Cartogram in Cartography 12. Selected production of thematical maps and atlases 13. Evaluation of thematical maps Practice 1. Mental thematical maps 2. ArcMap basic knowledge - coordinate systems, selection 3. ArcMap - geoprocessing tools 4. Composition of thematical maps 5. Map of river basin 6. Cartograms and charts 7. Feature scale 8. Editing and georeferencing 9. Symbology in thematical maps 10. Semester work - selected thematical map
