Course objectives
Part I: Periodicity in the properties of the elements. Structure and properties of the allotropic forms of carbon: diamond, graphite and fullerenes. Electronic structure of fullerene molecules and their chemical reactivity. Endohedrally dopped fullerenes, nanotubes. Graphite intercalation compounds. Cluster molecules of the p-block elements. Clasification and nomenclature of borane clusters. Bonding in borane clusters-Wade's rules. Homopolyatomic cations and anions. Polyhedral skeletal electron pair theory and the structure of Zintl ions. Part II: Coordination chemistry of the most important elements. Study of comlexing equilibria, mechanisms of the comlex formation in the aqueous phase. Determination of stability constants. Exploitation of the complex formation in practice.
