Course objectives
In the laboratory course in nuclear chemistry students get acquainted, by way of performing practical labwork, with basic methods of the detection and measurement of ionizing radiation, handling of sources of ionizing radiation, properties of ionizing radiation, separation and characterization of selected radionuclides, and activation analysis. They will also be instructed on the Czech law a regulations concerning handling sources of ionizing radiation, and with principles of radiation protection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Radiation safety and protection. 2. Error in measurement of radioactivity. 3. Geiger-Müller counter. 4. Crystal scintillation detector. 5. Absorption and self-absorption of beta radiation. 6. Liquid scintillation. 7. Absorption of gamma radiation. 8. Determination of the half-life of a short-lived radionuclide. 9. Determination of the half-life of a long-lived radionuclide. 10. Radioactive equilibrium. 11. Activation. 12. The tracer method - determination of ionic charge. 13. Gamma spectroscopy with crystal detector. 14. Gamma spektroscopy with semiconducor detector.
