Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce some basic laboratory exercises that can be used in high school classes, including methodology of teaching laboratory lessons.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student: is able to select an appropriate laboratory exercise for the class topic; is able to organize the exercise as well as to prepare required chemicals and materials; is methodologically prepared to teach laboratory lessons at high school.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic laboratory operations, construction of apparatus
  • 2. Determination of molar mass of carbon dioxide
  • 3. The principle of black and white photography and similar reactions
  • 4. pH of salts
  • 5. Chemical kinetics - influence of temperature
  • 6. Chemical kinetics - influence of concentration
  • 7. Catalyst and reactant; autocatalysis
  • 8. Determination of iron(2+) ions spectrophotometricaly and by manganometry
  • 9. Study of autocatalytic reaction between oxalic acid and permanganate photometricaly and by measuring the increase of carbon dioxide concentration
  • 10. Preparation of "gold": a) lead(II) iodide; b) covering a copper sheet by brass
  • 11. Preparation of copper acetate from copper sulfate; preparation of tetraamminecopper(II) sulfate
  • 12. Preparation and reactions of soap
  • 13. Fermentation and distillation
  • 14. Determination of chlorides by argentometry
  • 15. Determination of number of water molecules in copper sulfate hydrate
  • 16. Acidic hydrolysis of starch
