The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
This course follows-up the lectures regarding conservation of inorganic and organic materials. Students will be acquainted with specialties of materials found in the course of archaeological surveys. Lecture deepens knowledge about modern approaches in conservation technologies used in the course of terrain works. Within practical part of the lecture, students attend archaeological places of interest where they have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.

Syllabus
  • 1.Introduction. Elementary nomenclature in archaeology. Periodization of primeval ages and early historical period.
  • 2.Ways of archaeological research; destructive and non-destructive methods.
  • 3.Objects and materials found in archaeological locality and methods of material survey.
  • 4.Sampling in archaeological locality.
  • 5.Metallic objects in archaeological localities, ways of picking up findings in terrain.
  • 6.Ceramic and glass objects in archaeological localities, ways of picking up in terrain.
  • 7.Plasters and mortars of historical buildings, documentation, sampling.
  • 8.Skeleton findings. Conservation of skeleton material found in archaeological localities, specific approach to skeleton and biological material.
  • 9.Obtaining, description and ways of paleobotanic material storage.
  • 10.Conservation of biological material coming from water media of archaeological localities, findings of wood, leather and textile in wells, pits, and river-basins.
  • 11.Specialties of archaeological artifact treatment where more materials are combined.
  • 12.Archaeological sampling for scientific analyses.
  • 13.Documentation of conservation treatment that was carried out on archaeological objects.
  • 14.Deposition and re-conservation of archaeological findings.
