Course objectives
The objective is to demonstrate some topics which are not included in regular courses offered at Masaryk University. The course is offered by external lecturers who talk about their research. There are different lecturers every semester. Rather than a comprehensive coverage of some subject, the purpose of this course is to define scientific problems in a focused topic, describe methods applied to solve these problems and present results of particular projects.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, the student:
- will have basic ideas about one sub-discipline of ecology that is not covered in a comparable extent in regular courses taught at Masaryk University;
- know the main questions of current research in this sub-discipline;
- know new methods of ecological research.
Syllabus
  • In the spring semester of 2023, the course theme will be "Tidy Data in R". The lecturers will be Mgr. Irena Axmanová Ph.D and Mgr. Kryštof Chytrý. The course will be in English.
    The full-day course will take place on Friday, April 14, 2023.
    In the course, we will introduce modern programming methods in R, mainly using the "tidyverse" library collection. The aim of the course is to teach students to organize their data into a form suitable for statistical analysis and visualization. The prerequisites are at least basic knowledge of working in R and a personal laptop with up-to-date R and R Studio programs installed.
    The course will include:
    - data upload, use of `%>%` operator (readxl, readr, tibble)
    - selections, filtering and summaries of tables (dplyr)
    - usage of regular expressions (stringr)
    - transforming tables between wide and long formats (tidyr)
    - joining data from different sources (dplyr)
    - fundamentals of data visualization (forcats, ggplot2) including maps(sf)
    - extra: use of lists, loops and nested tables (purrr, furrr, tidyr)
