Course objectives
At the end of the course, the students will get an overview of the most common experimental animal models used in Experimental Embryology and practical skills for their usage in a variety of experimental approaches.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- design simple experiments while using methods of Experimental Embryology
- practically manage experiment on model species
- determine developmental stages on models
- describe significant microscopic structures in selected developmental stages in model species
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the course - methodology of scientific work, experimental design, assignment of student projects
  • 2. Drosophila - work with embryos
  • 3. C. elegans - work with embryos
  • 4. Danio I - work with embryos
  • 5. Danio II - comparative microscopic embryology
  • 6. Xenopus - work with embryos, microinjection
  • 7. Chicken model I - eggs opening, embryo staging, application of morphogen to chicken embryo (implantation, injection)
  • 8. Chicken model II - collection and processing of embryological material, skeleton staining, examples of developmental disorders
  • 9. Chicken model III - comparative microscopic embryology
  • 10. Mouse model I - collection and processing of embryological material, the establishment of primary cell and tissue cultures, transfection with GFP plasmid
  • 11. Mouse model II - LUC assay, cryosections, in vivo imaging on primary cell cultures

Teaching methods
Teaching is based on practical exercises on model species in the laboratory. Moreover, students will discuss their projects, which will be designed by them and presented to classmates. These presentations will be prepared by them individually at home. Microscopic slides will be demonstrated first by the teacher and then students will work with samples independently.
Assessment methods
Evaluation will be based on student performance during the presentation of their project. Quality of written assay, presentation, and discussion will be evaluated.
