Prerequisites
Critical thinking, a basic overview of the geography of the Earth, the development of human society, industry and industrial processes, the living and inanimate nature of the planet.

Course objectives
To show the development of the use of various raw materials and energy resources with regard to the development of human society, to demonstrate the basic categories of minerals and their use, to analyze the limits and risks of the use of raw materials and their reserves.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to critically analyze the use of industrial raw materials and present arguments for their use.
Syllabus
  • 1. Geosources and their position in the structure of resources for survival and development of people up to the present
  • 2. History of resource use - from random collections to predatory culture
  • 3. Minerals - the "most globalized" material used by humans on the planet
  • 4. What is needed and what needs to be done so that we can use some raw material resource
  • 5. Life of current resources (how long they will last) and what are the alternatives and perspectives
  • 6. Conventional and unconventional raw materials resources/reserves for the sustainable development of human civilization
  • 7. Socio-economic aspects of obtaining raw materials and conflicts of interest
  • 8. Critical and hi-tech strategic raw materials and their importance not only for the digital economy
  • 9. Energy resources and raw materials
  • 10. Sources for obtaining industrial metals
  • 11. Raw materials and their sources for construction
  • 12. Sources of raw materials for the chemical industry
  • 13. Fertilizers (traditional, non-traditional and sustainable resources) and their impact on modern agriculture
  • 14. Risks to the planet's geospheres (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere) related to the use of resources and their solutions
Teaching methods
lecture, supplemented by the method of interview/discussion with students and their immediate questions
Assessment methods
discussion/elaboration and defense of reflection on the life cycle of everyday objects in contrast to the costs and needs of resources for unnecessary subjects, test of basic concepts/terms from individual topics
