Books connect us to the spirit of all nations and times. Masaryk University Libraries Tomáš Carrigue Masaryk At Masaryk University (MU), there is a wide net of faculty central libraries and department libraries. All libraries provide library and information services for their users. Concurrently University Library for Students with Special Needs, Library of University Centre Telf and Library of University of the Third Age operate at MU. Together, the libraries hold more than 1.8 million of documents. The libraries are wheelchair accessible and like all the other premises of MU they are covered by WiFi. The history of MU libraries begins with the establishment of Masaryk University in 1919 when the Faculties of Medicine, Science, Arts and Law were founded. Two main historical turning points in 20th century - years 1939 and 1948 - negatively influenced the democratic functioning of the whole university. The libraries only gained back their original independent status and function after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. New faculties (Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Informatics, Faculty of Social Studies, and Faculty of Sports Studies) have been established at MU since the 1990s. The libraries have moved to new or reconstructed premises and the University Campus Bohunice has been built. MU libraries operate as an integrated system: they closely cooperate with each other and coordinate their efforts in developing services and information technologies through the Library and Information Centre at the MU Institute of Computer Science. Equal and free access to all services provided by MU libraries is guaranteed to each university student or staff member. For more information, see: http://library.muni.cz/. For users' convenience the registration procedures and loan periods are same in all MU libraries and the library system Aleph MU http://aleph.muni.cz/ is used for searching documents in the union catalogue. The catalogue contains records of documents from all MU libraries; it is also connected to the digital archive of diploma theses. Registered users can place holds on books, renew their loans, and use other online services. Although the aim and range of services provided by each library differ according to the demands and needs of the faculty, all MU libraries provide the following services: • on-site / off-site loan services for MU students, staff, and the general public, • reference and information services, • printing, photocopying, and scanning services (except Fl MU), cashless credit system SUPO (|supo||) for paying for these services, • interlibrary loan services including international ones, • computer study rooms, • WiFi network Eduroam (^^D). There is a wide range of electronic information resources (e-resources) available at MU that can be used for scientific purposes, research, and education. The e-resources include databases, digital libraries, e-journals, and e-books. Most of them are licensed e-resources that MU subscribes to and are available to all MU students and staff. The access to the licensed e-resources is possible from the PCs at university or from off-site PCs via remote access. For more information, see: http://ezdroje.muni.cz. All e-resources and the library catalogue are also accessible from the central searching tool discovery.muni, which provides links to full texts of documents and gives information about the availability of printed documents within MU libraries. Access to discovery: http://discovery.muni.cz. Issued by Masaryk University in 2015 www.muni.cz/library RNDr. Miroslav Bartošek, CSc.
