City of Brno
Brno, the historical capital of Moravia, is an ideal base for students
wishing to study in Central Europe. The second largest
city in the Czech Republic (pop. 400,000), it is large enough to
possess all the benefits of a major European centre, but small
enough to retain its coziness and charm. The city`s historical
centre echoes that of Vienna, complete with cobblestone pedestrian
zones and fascinating architecture spanning the period
from the beginning of the Middle Ages to the present day.

The programme Economic Aspects of Transformation
consists of five subjects:
* Transformation of the Czech economy and its economic
policies
* Business Management in the Czech Republic
* Transformation of the financial system in the Czech
Republic
* Transformation of the Public Sector
* Impacts of the transformation on regional development in
the Czech Republic
Economic Aspects of the Transformation program certificate
will be offered to those students who will pass four subjects
of five.
Program cost  2,950 per semester includes:

Transformation of the Czech economy and its
economic policies
The course provides students with an overview of the
economic transformation of the Czech Republic from its
initial state in 1990 up to the present day. Knowledge of
the subject should help students to better understand the
functioning of the economic policy during the transformation
period.

* impacts of transformation on different spheres of the Czech
economy - monetary politics, privatisation, structural
changes in industry, foreign trade, the employment
market, juristic aspects of transformation
Business Management in the Czech Republic
This course familiarizes students with the development trends
in companies in the Czech Republic during the period of transformation
and the present-day characteristic features of these
companies.

and social-culture relations
* possibilities for investors in the Czech Republic
* juridical legislature of companies in the Czech Republic
* analysis of successful companies (finance, marketing,
logistics)
* an excursion to a particular company
Transformation of the financial system in the
Czech Republic
This course gives students specialized information on the
starting conditions, process and results of the transformation
of the national financial system of the Czech Republic.
* entry conditions, history and actual dates of the transformationof
the financial system of the Czech Republic.
This course follows the continual transformation of the
financial system of the Czech Republic towards standards
of market economics. Subjects of the course are about key
factors of the financial system of the Czech Republic.
Transformation of the Public Sector
This course familiarizes students with the development,
history and changes of the emerging public sector in the Czech
Republic. Its aim is to deepen knowledge of the functioning of
the public sector under the specific conditions of an economy
in transformation.

after the 1989 during transformation
* principle characteristics of the actual condition of the Czech
public sector and possibilities of transformation
* development of budget policy in the Czech Republic
* tax reform in the Czech Republic, fiscal policy

Impacts of the transformation on regional development
in the Czech Republic
This course provides knowledge of the wider contexts of the
transformation period in post-communist countries. Questions
relating to social, demographic, geographic, regional and economic
development are explained against examples of the
Czech Republic and other countries of Central and Eastern
Europe. The student will obtain knowledge helping him to better
understand the transformation process and its effect on
regional and local development.

General information:
Housing and meals
Accommodation and meals are included in the programme fee.
Students live in modern university dormitories sharing double
rooms (each with an ensuite bathroom and kitchenette) with
Czech or other foreign students. They have full access to university
computer centres, sports facilities, canteens and laun-
dries.
Orientation week
The orientation week programme includes visits to university
libraries and computer centres, an intensive "Czech
survival" course, introductory talks on Czech culture and
society, a tour of Brno and visit to the city museum, a reception
bringing together international and Czech students
as well as to the Masaryk University faculty itself, and excursions
to the surroundings of Brno.
Medical insurance and student visas (if needed) must be arranged
by applicants themselves before traveling to the Czech
Republic.
