Introduction

Dear students,

let me, on behalf of all authors, introduce you briefly the study material Case Reports from Pharmacology. The aim of this collection of case reports is to give you an insight into the use of drugs in the clinical practice with the stress on the need of the comprehensive view of the patient. You can improve your analytic abilities, refresh your knowledge from physiology, biochemistry or pathophysiology and not least you can acquire the ability for search and use of information from relevant sources. The study of prepared cases could help you also to prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), where similar type of questions is used.

Case reports are classified into three groups according to their main topic. You can use search in the fulltext or in keywords of case reports, if you are interested in a specific drug, substance, or disease. Single cases are divided into parts followed by questions, to which you can display prepared answers. There is a link to the original article at the end of each report, which you can use for further study of the case. It is important to realize, that some of the cases used are from abroad or were not published recently, thus there can be some differences in diagnostic or therapeutic approaches to the actual or local ones.

We recommend the SPCs as a suitable source of information on drugs. For information in English you can use Electronic Medicines Compendium which the official drug database of Britain Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. Food and Drug Administration or www.drugs.com can be used for drugs marketed in the USA. Drugs used in the Czech Republic can be found in the database of the State Institute for Drug Control, nevertheless the SPCs available are only in Czech.
