Dr. Nika JENKO (University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, Slovenia) Working with long-term ill children in the hospital (Jak pracovat s dlouhodobě nemocnými dětmi v nemocnici) Thursday, 2.5.2019, 16:30-18:00, room 76 (Poříčí 31a, CVIDOS, 4th floor) (in English with interpreting) The lesson will have a special focus on working with children with cancer in the hospital environment. In the group of children with health disabilities, there is a significant proportion of children with cancer (50 children younger than 15 years are diagnosed with cancer in Slovenia every year). The disease itself and its treatment are accompanied with many discomfortable phenomena influencing child’s wellbeing, behaviour, physical appearance etc. For efficient cancer therapy, holistic approach for children with cancer and their families is necessary. A possible source of planning professional interventions in that context are creative and relaxation activities. The lecture will be focused on the significance and the effect of creative and relaxation activities on behaviour and well-being of young cancer patients during their hospitalisation. Different evaluation approaches and specific methodical adaptation of those activities will be discussed. Reading literacy of students with mild intellectual disabilities Friday, 3.5.2019, 13:30-15:30, room 5 (Poříčí 7) (in English) Developing reading literacy in the students with mild intellectual disabilities is extremely challenging. While there are similarities and differences between reading literacy in students with and without intellectual disabilities, the gap between the two groups increases with age. Reading difficulties of students with intellectual disabilities are complex and relate to different factors of reading literacy. The lecture will focus on reading characteristics and difficulties of the students with mild intellectual disabilities, reinforced with our research findings. Different recommendations for teaching reading to students with intellectual disabilities will be discussed.
