DO YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN AN
INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT?
Professor John Wilton of the University of Plymouth, U.K., will be conducting a research
project over the next two years based on the views of students at Masaryk University in two
faculties ­ the Faculty of Economics and Administration and the Faculty of Social Studies.
The research project is funded by the British Academy. The title of the project is `A
European Union identity: a case study of new European Union citizens in higher
education in the Czech Republic'. The aim of the project is to contribute an assessment of
future prospects for the development of a distinctive citizen European Union identity.
The project will run from September 2005 to August 2007. The aim is to survey students
from each of the two faculties (ESF and FSS) who are starting their second year and fourth
year of study at September 2005. Those students participating will be asked to complete a
short questionnaire at four specific times over those two years ­ at a short session of
between 30 minutes to an hour in November 2005, April 2006, October 2006, and April
2007. You do not have to be a supporter of the EU to take part. The project should
include those in favour of the EU and those not in favour of it.
The questionnaire will focus on six sections of questions relating to how the student
participants identify themselves as citizens (i.e. Czech, EU, Czech/EU, EU/Czech), their
perception of the EU as an institution (i.e. positive, negative, or neutral), what most
influences their perception of the EU, and their sources of information on the EU. Most of
the answers will simply require the student participants to rank their answers by preference
by placing a number next to the question. The questionnaires will be available in both
English and Czech, for those students not completely confident with their English.
