Formal e-mails

This semester your seminar work is business correspondence. Based on information you got in the lessons and specifics on form from the IB Style Guide and sample letters below, you will correspond with one of your colleagues and submit your e-mails together. You will write:

  1. Student Aan enquiry (asking for information about a product/service you are interested in either as an individual or a company representative),
  2. Student B - a reply to A's enquiry (giving info A asked for, offering to deliver, give discounts etc.),
  3. Student B - a complaint (complaining about a product/service, giving details of the problem and asking for compensation),
  4. Student A - a reply to B's complaint (agreeing/disagreeing with the complaint, offering a solution).

Each e-mail should be between half a page and one page (i.e. between 900 and 1800 characters) long, so try to come up with details and give background information. You are encouraged to use your imagination. Plagiarising (or being inspired to a great extent by) the sample letters will be considered unsatisfactory.

Your e-mails should include the information on who they are from and to, what the subject is and what the attachments are, if any.

Upload your own e-mails here by 13 November, name them your_name_emails.doc (docx, odt). Include information about who your partner is.

You can find information on structure and useful phrases in Style Guide, sections Letters (pp.16 and 17) and Emails (pp.18 and 19, only formal ones).

Below you can find sample letters of enquiry and complaints (and replies to them). Apart from the addresses, your e-mails should look approximately like them.

Complaint 1 and Reply to complaint 1

Complaint 2 and Reply to complaint 2

Complaint 3 and Reply to complaint 3

Instructions for seminar work correction:
Read the feedback notes in odevzdavarna. If you have trouble finding feedback for your seminar work, do the following:
Go to the original odevzdavarna. There's a folder next to your seminar work (the red box).

After you click the folder, you get to the feedback document:

Only those who uploaded the document can access feedback, so if you uploaded also your partner's e-mails, share the feedback with them.
Go through my comments, correct the problems, and upload the corrected version.

Upload the corrected e-mails here. The deadline is 10 December.
