BASEBALL

   

   1.      THE GAME

   -         Hard ball, bat

   -         2 teams of 9 players

   -         9  periods – innings, the winner is the one that scores the most runs

   -         top inning – visiting team plays offense at bat, after the offense has three outs -
   bottom – they switch positions

   

   2.      THE FIELD

   -         fair territory = infield + outfield; foul territory

   -         home plate

   -         pitcher´s mound

   -         dugouts – shelters for other players

   

   3.      EQUIPMENT

   -         Bat, spikes

   -         fielders – catching glove

   -         batters – helmet

   -         catchers – helmet, mask, chest protector, shin guards

   

   4.      THE TEAM

   -         9 players

   -         pitcher – throws the ball – each throw = pitch

   -         catcher – receives the ball, defends home plate

   -         3 basemen, shortstop, 3 outfielders

   -         manager – responsible for strategy – hand signals

   -         umpires

   

   5.      THE RULES

   -         strike – pitch that the batter swings at but does not hit and hits into foul ter.

   -         Ball – pitch outside the strike zone (between batter´s Armpits and knees)

   -         Walk – 4 balls – batter can proceed to the first base

   -         Fielders attempt to put the runners out – they can tag them with the ball ar tag the
   base

   

   6.      SCORING

   -         a runner scores by moving around all bases and crossing the home plate without being
   out out

   -         if a batter gets around all bases on one hit – home run, if the team scores 4 runs –
   grand slam
