Political Science 611: Comparative Political Economy

                                            Final Exam


I. Short Essays: Answer any two (2) questions. Read the instructions before answering and just
answer what the question asks.  Define your terms where necessary.  Please be brief – approximately
2 paragraphs. (25 points each)


 1. What was the postwar settlement and how did it lead to the compatibility of democracy and
capitalism?


 2. What are the differences between the three worlds of welfare capitalism?


 3. How does public choice theory explain why government cannot solve problems?


 4. What is the logic behind a coordinated market economy?



II. Long Essay. You must answer this question.  Make sure to define your terms. Your essay should
be approximately 2-3 pages.  (50 points)


The second half of the course has focused mainly on the advanced industrial economies. Is it right
to separate the political economy of these countries from the political economy of development? Is
there a different logic to how political economy functions in these countries? Or should is there a
single logic that explains both development and the advanced industrial states? What are the main
similarities and the main differences between the two? What explains these similarities and/or
differences?
