SOC 783 Transnational Studies FINAL EXAM Thirty percent (30%) of your grade will be based on a final exam due by 23:59 on January 10, 2013.* Please follow the guidelines below, and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I answer most e-mails within 24 hours. You should choose five (5) of the questions below and write an essay response to each. IN ADDITION, EVERYONE MUST ANSWER QUESTION #1. To be clear, you will answer a total of six (6) questions. Your responses should be no less than 300 words each. There is no maximum limit. If you use material that is NOT part of the syllabus, please make sure you include a full citation for each source. Otherwise, you may refer to the course readings by author and week number. 1) Sanjeev Khagram and Peggy Levitt (Week 1) provide seven (7) sets of research questions for moving towards a transnational studies perspective. Please identify and discuss each briefly, providing examples from the readings for the semester. 2) Design a research project that examines immigrants and their integration into their host society. Justify your method(s) and methodology and make sure you elaborate your epistemological position. 3) “A transnational perspective can better help us understand the virtual world.” Please take a position on this statement and elaborate it. 4) Has globalization resulted in the Westernization of the world? Please take a position on this question that utilizes at least two (2) readings from the semester. 5) Has the nation state weakened in the past 30 years? Please take a position on this question that utilizes at least two (2) readings from the semester. 6) Is there such a thing as “global culture?” Please use at least two (2) readings from the semester in your answer. 7) Do you think there is a transnational public sphere? Please use at least two (2) readings from the semester in your answer. 8) Define and discuss the concept of social remittances. 9) Discuss the importance of transnational networks with regard to religion. Please use at least two (2) readings from the semester in your answer. 10) “To understand contemporary social life, social scientists must utilize a transnational lens.” Please take a position on this statement and elaborate it. NOTE: Late exams will be marked down by 2 points (out of 30) for each day they are late. *IMPORTANT NOTE: Students sitting for the State Master’s Exam on January 10, 2013 must submit their exams by January 3, 2013.
