ENGLISH FOR SELECTED BACHELOR SPECIALIZATIONS BSAJ, BFAJ, BPAJ, BOAJ, BTAJ, BZAJ, BVAJ, BRAJ, BHAJ AUTUMN SEMESTER 2018 1 Seminar groups and their teachers: Code: Specialization: Teacher: BLAN0321 Angličtina I English for laboratory technicians (zdravotní laboranti) Jana Klapilová Course prerequisite: LF: CJVAT01 English - Entrance Test (Autumn 2018)/ Angličtina - vstupní test (Podzim 2017), serves as a selfdiagnostic tool for students, minimum required entry level for courses of Medical English is B1 (Intermediate) as the competence required and further developed in the course is B2 (Upper-intermediate) CEFR level. Course content/objectives: At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to common laboratory work, name laboratory equipment and define its functions, describe individual steps of laboratory procedures, apply professional language in communication with doctors and colleagues, interpret laboratory reports as well as use grammatical structures (at B2 level) typical of medical language. Course schedule: W1: 17-21 Sept – U1: The job of laboratory technician. Laboratory equipment. W2: 24-28 Sept – U2: Routine chemistry analyzers W3: 1-5 Oct, – U3: Spectrophotometry W4: 8-13 Oct – U4: Clinical Haematology W5: 15-19 Oct – U5: HIV W6: 22-26 Oct – U6: Electrophoresis W7: 29 Oct- 2 Nov – U7: Osmometry W8: 5-9 Nov – MIDTERM TEST (about 50-60 minutes), the rest of lesson runs as usual. W9: 12-16 Nov – U8: Blood Transfusion W10: 19-23 Nov – U9: Chromatography W11: 26-30 Nov, – U10: Clinical biochemistry W12: 3-7 Dec – U11: Atomic absorption spectrophotometry W13: 10-14 Dec – REVISION W14: CREDIT TEST WEEK: no regular classes, special classes in seminar groups where lessons were cancelled three and more times during the semester, credit tests taken either in respective seminar groups or in special times on TUE 18 Dec and/or WED 19 Dec (late afternoon, early evening). The final test date during W14 will be determined based on student preferences. There will be more exam dates in Jan/Feb 2019. However, all students are encouraged to take the test for the purposes of self-assessment. Lessons: Students come to school prepared for lessons having done homework they might have been assigned during a previous lesson. They will also have printed in-class material for each respective lesson. Absences beyond this quota are excused provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office for Studies which then officially displays it in the IS. Attendance - special regime for “students with certificates“: Students with certificates (FCE, CAE, CPE, not maturita - Czech or Slovak) proving communicative competence at the B2 CEFR level and higher will upload the copies of their certificates under the following link by 7 Oct 2018 https://is.muni.cz/auth/el/1411/podzim2018/VSAJ0121/ode/ode_65255697/. After doing so, they are exempt from the duty to attend the course, although they are strongly recommended to do so. The so called certificate students fulfil all the other study requirements in the same way as students without certificates.
