In the quiet moments before dawn, when the world holds its breath and the first rays of light tiptoe across the horizon, there lies a tavern nestled amidst the shadows of towering buildings. Once bustling with merry laughter and the clinking of tankards, it now stands in disarray, a silent witness to the revelry of the night before. The air is thick with the scent of spilled ale and the faint tang of smoke, a lingering testament to the chaos that had ensued. Tables lie overturned, splintered wood littering the floor like fallen soldiers in a forgotten battle.
Your band lies amidst the wreckage, joyfully ignorant to the chaos surrounding you. A new day had begun and the common folk starts roaming the streets. The tavern in its new glory catches eyes of many but a more peculiar event lying not so far in a side alley quickly attracts even wider attention. Then, a sudden scream abruptly wakes you from your peaceful slumber.
As you all slowly regain consciousness, the world around you swims into focus. Heads throb with relentless aches, and tongues feel as though they've been coated in sand. Blinking against the dim light filtering through shattered windows, you find yourselves lying amidst the wreckage of what was once a lively tavern.
Memories from the previous night are but fragmented shards, like distant whispers echoing in the recesses of your minds. Faces blur together, laughter mingles with shouts, and the music of the night swirls around you like a haunting melody.
As you struggle to your feet, you survey the scene with a mix of confusion and resignation. How did you end up in this desolate ruin? Where are you? When are you? But most importantly...

[[GO OUTSIDE]]You look around the bar. The shelves are broken and much of the alcohol is spilled everywhere. Almost nothing had survived the revelry of the night. As if it was a miracle a single bottle lies untouched amidst the ruin. The inscription reads DURAD ÂTAST. You are no expert, but it looks like some sort of dwarven rum.
Surely, no one is going to miss another bottle.

There is nothing wrong with taking a little of the hair from the dog that bit you. Each of you takes a good swig from the bottle. You start to feel its effect immediately. Your neck is burning, and you begin to choke. Your legs grow weak, and you slam yourself to the floor. After much effort you finally stand back up and manage to find balance. You feel like someone smashed your chest with a hammer. At least the hangover subsides ...for now.

[[Continue]]You take a stroll around a podium. You vaguely remember some Bard telling tales about… a mouse? He seemed very fixated on one of the guests. You also remember somebody buying the whole tavern a round of drinks. Or was it two? You remember getting into an argument. Somebody really disliked your face and decided to explain you something about mages and crime statistics. You don’t know who started the fight but looking at your surroundings you can take a wild guess at who finished it. That is as far as your memory can go but hopefully you can find someone who will remember the night a bit better.
[[Continue]]You stumble towards the exit. As you walk outside you are blinded by the sunlight. You can hear a large group of people nearby. They are shouting something and seem to be distressed. There is a giant clock on the city hall. It is $hour.
[[FOLLOW THE NOISE]]As you approach the crowd you see they are all gathered around something obscured from your view. The crowd murmurs nervously and all the voices mixing together make it hard to discern what happened. You can catch a glimpse of a guards arguing with the crowd.
“Scatter! Don’t interfere with the crime scene. There is nothing to see.”
“Nothing to see my ass! The mayor’s been murdered!”
“It’s the mages! Those terrorists are after us.”
“Now, now! If you don’t disappear within a minute, you’ll be spending the rest of the day in a cell.”
“The guardhouse is right on the corner. What were you idiots doing?”
“I SAID LEAVE!”
[[WAIT HERE FOR A MOMENT]]The crowd slowly disperses, allowing you to see the crime scene yourself. (describe mayor here). His body is bruised, and there is a piece of a stick lodged into his stomach. His outfit is tattered and soaked in blood.
One of the guards notices you.
“Well, well. If it isn’t our mercenaries. Looks like one of the culprits slipped by. Since the late mayor put so much trust in you, care to help us in this mess?”
<<linkreplace '"What happened?"'>>
"What happened?"
“Well, as you can see, our dear Mr. Sarro has been murdered, and… we are investigating right now for more details.”
“Captain’s going to be really happy when he returns.”
“Anyway, since we’ve been cooperating so far, could you help us here?”

"Well... we just woke up after some wild party and are still trying to get our minds together"
The guards look past you on the rubble you could once call a tavern with disbelief.
“This will be a long day.” Sighs one of them.
“Captain is going to be furious.”
"How did?… Just…" He sighs in resignation and continues with his speech: "Listen here: Somebody tried to kill the mayor in the past. We hired you to infiltrate the local folk, so that you could help us with catching the suspected assassins. Just yesterday you saved mayor’s life, and we arrested two culprits. If you don’t feel good right now just stand back and visit us when you get your stuff together“

"You told me four times already but what am I supposed to do? The mages are getting more agressive each day, we are losing control of the outskirts and now someone killed the mayor! Petty vandalism is the last thing on my mind right now."
"PETTY VANDALISM?! THEY DESTROYED MY TAVERN"

The hobbit suddenly notices you and starts screaming more than before
"THAT'S THEM!!! THESE BARBARIANS DESTROYED MY TAVERN!!! ARREST THEM NOW!!!"

"Will you shut up for a moment? The cells are full, If I were to arrest them I would have to release some of the mages and you know what that would mean"
"I DEMAND JUSTICE!" //Fosco's// voice seems to be getting weaker.
"Then go before the council for all I care. Can't you try to settle it peacefully? I really have no options here!"
"And put up with all the bureaucracy? It will take weeks before I get a hearing!"
"Then try to settle it with them" He points towards you. "Best I can do is write it into the protocol and make some agreement on reparations."

"But I will lose about 1000 gold since I can't work now."

"'Tis a long story lads. Are you sure you want to hear it all? But then again, you paid, so its the product you bought." He looks at you, half expecting you to leave, but seeing you are waiting for his story, he speaks up.
„It started in times of me grandad. He was one true dwarf, tell you that. He had just moved into this city and back then, there used to be quite a huge mage community. They were mostly holed up in their little district, where the prison now stands. One of them was weirdly interested in my granddad’s wares. At the time, it was just business. But it all changed one day. I wasn’t born yet, but I remember fondly how my pop told me this story. He was just a wee dwarf at the time, maybe 40 years old. He was helping my granddad pack up after a productive day, when a huge explosion lit the sky. It came from the mage district.” He suddenly stops and looks at you. “Shall I continue or am I just boring you, lads?”

The dwarf gives in to your requests and continues, but not before pouring himself a shot of dwarven rum from a bottle he mysteriously pulled from under the counter. “Listen now lads, for this will be ugly and I don’t want to repeat meself. As the smoke filled the sky, pieces of metal came raining down on. Me pop was almost squashed by a huge metal plate, fitted with tubes, wires and strange crystal. He ducked just in time to dodge an otherwise deadly fireball, that came out flying from one of those tubes. I remember to this day the tone with which he told me this next part. As he looked at the plate and tubes, he spotted something horrible. My granddad’s logo was on them.” The dwarf pauses and tears can be seen forming in his eyes, which in itself is quite unusual. “Other flying chunks killed me grandma and chopped of me granddad’s arm.”
He sighs yet again and pours himself another shot. “The guards soon came for granddad, thinking he was somehow associated with it, when the poor dwarf had only been selling his stuff to other people. Can you imagine the situation? Me pop became the man of the household, at such a young age. Everyone suddenly hated him.” He pours himself yet another shot, clearly drinking away the pain this story causes him. “With reputation ruined, me pop had to do all kind of disgusting stuff in order to feed himself. He was an orphan, at this point.
He even had to help build that huge prison, just to see his pop be thrown in it. Me granddad was never freed. But lady luck was on me pop’s side. Just after 70 years, another dwarf family came into town, with daughter just his age. That girl was me mother. With her help, he slowly rebuilt the shop, although it never reached its former glory. Cut to the present and ‘tis me shop now.”
<<linkreplace "Still, could you please tell us more about the mages? ">>
As you ask him, he frowns once again. “I don’t know much. Some mage was tinkering with me granddad’s stuff and it backfired. Later, there were huge pogroms against them. Turned out the imbeciles were trying to fuse machine with magic, to create stronger weapons. Idiots. That is the reason everybody hates mages.”<</linkreplace>>

heard. You rush to the scene and see a carriage arrive in front of mayor’s mansion. The doors open and a man appeared. The crowd was shouting at him.
“Welcome back Timothy!”
“Timothy, please be the next mayor!”
“We love you, Timothy!”
At the same time, there could be heard voices against him.
“You haven’t been here for your father when he needed you. What makes you think you are of any use now?”
The man, whom you by now figure to be mayor’s returned son Timothy, didn’t seem to mind them. He climbed up the stairs and turned to face the crowd.
“Great citizens of this city. I understand why some of you aren’t happy to see me. But please, believe me. I loved my father like no one else. It pains my heart to be here, to attend his funeral. I want you to know this. I will not usurp my father’s place. You are free to elect whoever you want to be the next mayor. If you want me to, I can be a candidate. But nothing more.”
With those words, he went inside the mansion, followed by his close group of guards.
<<set $hour +=1>>
[[continue|son2]]You didn’t really know what to take from it at first, but it would soon be clear that it
would be part of your business. Not even half an hour after Timothy’s arrival, a guard
approached you.
“Revered adventurers, my lord, Timothy, the late mayor’s only son, wouldwish to speak with you. He heard that you were hired by his father and were very helpful to him. If you wouldn’t mind, he would like exchange a few words.”
It didn’t seem like it was a choice to you, so you reluctantly obliged and followed the guard.
You are lead into a large room with table just as magnificent. There sits Timothy,
seemingly waiting for you. He signals you to sit down.
[[continue|son3]]Timothy pours himself a glass of water, before asking a nearby butler to do the
same for you. There are already glasses on the table, so the waiter just pours in the liquid.
After a while, Timothy breaks the silence. “Sooo, my dear adventurers. I’ve heard my father employed you, so I figured I might ask you to help me investigate his murder. Will you help me?”
[[agree to help|helpson]]
[[reject the offer|rejectson]]“Good, good. Well, I suppose I should introduce myself. After all, I will be your new employer. As you already know, my name is Timothy Sarro and I am the only son of my late father, Alexius Sarro. I haven’t been in this town for some time now, as my father has sent me to study in our capital. I am knowledgeable in things such history of this land, history of mages, well, history in general. Under my belt also fall certain economy theories, which I study now. My father actually guided me to choose this path, as we both thought it would ultimately benefit this lovely town.”
[[continue|mansion]][[You are several hundreds of gold in debt, the tavernkeepers guild hates you, it would be wiser to accept|helpson]]You wander around the mansion, peeking into rooms and admiring their beauty. The main hall is adorned with incredible paintings. The downstair rooms are more simple, more suited for the staff of the mansion. You go through a big kitchen, equipped with every possible cooking utensil you can think of and even some you have never seen before. You also see the staff quarters, where butlers and maids reside when not working. As the mansion doesn’t have a garden, you find a room where trees are grown indoors. There are also seedbeds filled various different vegetables.
Upstairs, you find more elegant rooms, such as the one you met Timothy in. Portraits are hanging on almost every wall. You walk into what seems like a library. Rows of books everywhere, your eyes almost didn’t know where to look. How could anyone have such a huge collection? It seemed like there is every book that was ever written. You would admire them for longer, but a butler suddenly interrupted you. “Excuse me, but my lord is waiting for you.”
You are once again led to the meeting room. On the table are now various items, such as mayor’s bloody coat, his pocket knife and other personal belongings. Timothy welcomes you. “Dear adventurers, these are the items that belonged to my father. Please, have a look at them.
