SV4BP_2AB1 English for Social Educators, autumn semester 2018, teacher: Chris Williams MA, COURSE INTRODUCTION TOPICS Throughout the semester there will be 4 topics covered where each of them will be allotted about two to three 100-minute periods of instruction time. The topics in this B course have been chosen to reflect legal and ethical dimension of social education. Topic 1: HUMAN RIGHTS (classification of human rights, human rights concepts, women's rights, right to privacy vs. public security) Topic 2: SOCIAL JUSTICE (social justice concepts: access to education, redistribution of wealth, rights and responsibilities, social mobility, social equality vs. inequality, etc.) Topic 3: JUVENILE DELINQUENCY (violence in computer games, types of crime, reintegration of prisoners into society) Topic 4: ETHICAL AND LEGAL ISSUES OF SOCIAL WORK (confidentiality, professional boundaries, respect for the client's rights, code of conduct for social workers) GRAMMAR TOPICS 1 Modal verbs. 2 Conditional clauses. 3 Simple passive. 4 Countable x uncountable nouns, quantifiers. 5 Relative pronouns, relative clauses. 6 Phrasal verbs. 7 Verbs – gerund x infinitive. 8 Prepositions, prepositional phrases. 9 Determiners. COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS ① Attendance (only 2 lessons can be missed), other absences excused through the Study department ② Home preparation – grammar files, worksheet exercises ③ Writing (exam practice) – to be posted in ODEVZDÁVÁRNA by 20 November 2016. You will choose ONE of the following topics. Answer the following question expressing your opinion in 120-140 words. Structure your thoughts logically. TOPIC 1 Public security vs. privacy. When do they complement each other and when do they clash? TOPIC 2 The work of a social worker is full of dilemmas. Discuss pros and cons of working as a social worker. TOPIC 3 A 10-year old boy stamped to death his 6-year old sister. He said he thought they were just playing. Can 10-year old children be guilty of murder? TOPIC 4 Verbal abuse is now included in the domestic violence definition. Why do words hurt so much? TOPIC 5 Research says the majority of children bullied at school share the same characteristics. What do bullied children have in common? ④ PPT presentation in pairs (10 minutes + 5 minutes of discussion time). In order to be able to practise the language of interaction the presentation needs to be done in pairs. If there is an even number of people in the group, there will be a group of three presenters. You may choose one of the following presentation topics: 1 Capital punishment. 2 Prevention of bullying in Czech schools. 3 Drug prevention in Czech schools. 4 The mission of Probační a mediační služba ČR (Probation and mediation service in the Czech Republic). 5 Women's rights globally – is the situation improving? The presentations will take place on the following dates: Monday group: 3rd and 10th December, Wednesday group: 5th and 12th December Choose a topic and inform others through the discussion forum. !!!! IMPORTANT NOTE: students re-taking the course do not have to fulfil the above 1-4 criteria although they are strongly encouraged to do so in order to increase their chance of successfully retaking the course. FINAL EXAM – looks at the grammar and vocabulary of Semester A and Semester B. 1 Written part = total number of points 75, pass mark 65% = 49 points The information regarding the exam test stucture is included in the Study Materials (file titled Informace ke zkouškovému testu). You need to score 65% to pass the written test and be able to proceed to the oral part. 2 Oral part done IN PAIRS = total number of points 25, pass mark = 65% = 16 points Subpart 1: monologue (1 minute, introduction of yourself and your studies) Subpart 2. dialogue (6 minutes, a discussion with a fellow student about a question/ topic connected with the materials) Final grade: A = 100-93, B = 92-86, C = 85-79, D = 78-72, E = 71-65
