topics (chosen to reflect medical dimension of social education):

-          Addiction: types of addiction, soft drug legalization, addicts within a family

-          Mental health: mental disorders, anxiety and depression, emotional pain, eating
disorders, dementia

-          Physical disability: psychological and social aspects of disability, first aid

-          End of life care: palliative care, euthanasia, patients’ rights

grammar:

future forms, present simple vs. continuous, past simple vs. continuous, present perfect tenses,
language structures for sentence transformations, modals, passive forms, wordformation – abstract
vocabulary, verbs + ing forms / infinitives / prepositions

assessment:

-          essay: 10 points

-          presentation 10 points

-          final test: 30 points

Total number of points for the semester: 50 points, pass mark (65%): 32 points.

other requirements:

-          attendance (only 2 lessons can be missed), other absences excused through the Study
department

-          home preparation – grammar files, worksheet exercises

-          written assignment  – to be posted in ODEVZDÁVÁRNA by 11 November 2018

-          pair presentations – to be delivered in class (the last seminars before Xmas)

You will choose ONE of the topics below. Cover at least 2 of the essay theses/statements. Give your
view, summarize. Language focus: Expressing opinion, summarizing.Word count: 170-220 words. To be
uploaded in “odevzdávárna” by 11 NOVEMBER 2017.

A: An addicted person in a family

o    How difficult is it to recognize an addiction in a family

o   How difficult is it to come to terms with addiction in a family?

o   What are the most important do's?

o   What are the most important dont's?

o   Should those looking after an addict be allowed to seek professional help?

B: Euthanasia

o   Do we have a right to die or do we legalize murder through euthanasia?

o   In general, how do personal beliefs about life after death affect people's attitude to
euthanasia?

o   Do advances in medicine through which lives are saved give us a right to terminate a life?

o   Is a patient in a critical condition able to make an informed decision about their
situation?

o   Does practising euthanasia bring economic gains or losses?

pair presentation details:

PPT / prezi presentation in pairs (10 minutes + 5 minutes of discussion time). In order to be able
to practise the language of interaction, the presentation needs to be done in pairs. If there is an
even number of people in the group, there will be a group of three presenters. You may choose one
of the following presentation topics OR create your own topic:

1) Soft drug
legalization.
                                       2) Workaholism.
                                                                                             3)
Addiction within a
family.
                           4) Mental health issues in children (eating disorders, low
self-confidence). Causes, consequences, solutions.
                                                                                       5) Care of
patients/relatives with
dementia.
       6) Psychological and social aspects of disability.
                                         7) First aid – most typical
situations.
               8) End of life care – hospices in the Czech Republic.
