Compensatory assignment
In late seventies a group of long-term imprisoned inmates decided that they will prove to
society that even convicts can be valuable members of the comunity. These prisoners have
created program of juvenile delinquency prevention – Scared straight.
In 1978 Arnold Shapiro made a very succesfull document „Scared straight“ (Oscar award,
Emmy award) about this program.

2) Second, answer these questions:
 Could this be program effectively prevent problematic and unlawful behavior?
 Would you agree with inclusion of this program into czech prevention practice?
 What are the principles of the program?
 Which emotions did you feel during watching the document?
3) Third, read articles „1“ and „2“
(or at least pages 1-5 and 14-17 from article „1“; pages 1-5 and 9-18 from article „2“)
4) Finally write a short essay (1-2 pages) in which you will express your opinion on program
and how it had change
a) after watching the document
b) after reading the paper
