Gazetteer of Palladian buildings in the United Kingdom and Irish Republic Introduction The purpose of this gazetteer of selected buildings is to demonstrate the powerful influence that Andrea Palladio and his followers exerted over architectural styles in the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Although many of the prime examples of Palladian architecture (for example, Wanstead House, Nuthall Temple, and Foots Cray Place) have long since disappeared, enough have survived the ravages of time to be visited and enjoyed. The gazetteer also makes reference to a number of mid to late 20th century domestic commissions for wealthy clients: these are not open to the public but show that, at one level at least, the Palladian tradition lives on! The gazetteer is in five sections – England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Irish Republic, and within each section the entries are arranged by county or unitary authority, although the complexities of local government administration since the many changes introduced from 1974 have made it necessary to simplify the arrangement Where a building accept visitors Visitor information provides a link to its website where details of visiting hours, entrance charges and events are normally provided. In the case of country houses, many of these are now in the care of the National Trust, others are privately owned but are open to the public; there are however a number listed which are not open at all for visitors because the owners do not wish to do so, or because they are have been converted to others uses, for example, independent schools As for the public buildings, for the most part they are still in use for the purpose for which they were built (for example, town or shire halls), and not available for visitors unless for business purposes, although a number, for example Liverpool Town Hall, offer special tours, perhaps once a year It is important to remember, that many the buildings, particularly the houses, are not as they where when first designed and built. As ownership changed hands or a new generation of a family took on responsibility for a house and its gardens, or fashions changed, then additions and improvements were often made, thereby diluting or obscuring the Palladian influence. Any buildings that have been so radically altered, or rebuilt perhaps after severe fire damage in such a manner that there is little trace of the original have been excluded Find out more provides bibliographical references for the visitor to find out more about any the buildings in which he or she may be interested. The references include both books and magazine articles, and primarily drawn from the pages of Country Life magazine, which from 1897 has been publishing regular features on country houses. This essential resource, as are all the other magazine articles and books listed) is available for consultation without charge at the British Architectural Library (http://www.architecture.com/LibraryDrawingsAndPhotographs/Home.aspx) RIBApix reference(s) provides the visitor with the reference numbers of any images relating to the building included in the British Architectural Library’s growing image database RIBApix (http://www.ribapix.com/). Enter the number in the Quick Search box and the image will be displayed, usually a photograph or a drawing; it is also possible to purchase copies of any of the images displayed Gazetteer 1 England Bath and North East Somerset Prior Park, Bath (Palladian bridge) (1750) Architect: Richard Jones Visitor information: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-priorpark Find out more: Mowl, Timothy Palladian bridges: Prior Park and the Whig connection.
