   The anime film is based on a short story (1967) by Akiyuki Nosaka.

   The film shows Second World War (War in the Pacific) from the opposite side – through the eyes
of people in Japan who suffered heavily from shortage of food and from air raids. Two children – a
brother and a sister – find it difficult to survive in the cruel conditions at the end of the war.
