No textbook. I have prepared materials - handouts which are available in this Osnova. I expect you to print them out and bring them to seminars. They will be available week by week.

OBJECTIVES

moving towards B2 level skills needed for reading, listening, speaking and writing about physical topics, including presentation skills

CREDITS - IF YOU MEET THE REQUIREMENTS:

  • attendance, in case of an illness or unexpected duties you can miss max two seminars during the whole semester
  • homework - completion of activities before and after sessions; coming unprepared for the lesson may result in counting an absence for this lesson
  • giving a short presentation - any topic of your choice about physics or related disciplines that you find relevant or interesting, preparing an abstract for your presentation
  • a mini scientific conference
  • writing an abstract of your presentation

2. Prepare for different roles to be covered at the mock conference (presenters, chairs, opening and closing speech)

2. Write an abstract of your presentation - to be submitted in week 5

1 Physics and organizing a conference

Key to exercises:

Think about an interesting topic for your presentation for this semester. Requirements:

- the topic is connected to physics and your studies

- the length of the presentation will be app. 10 minutes

- your audience will be our class, i.e. not experts from your field of study

Think about the name for our "conference".

Write it in the Mock Conference website - see the link above

2 ABSTRACT WRITING

HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 2:

Think about an interesting topic for your presentation for this semester. Requirements:

HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 3 - complete the missing parts of sentences in a summary about an abstract ex. 12

Key to exercises:

HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 4:

Please prepare the title, abstract and your bio for your future presentation in the JAF04 seminar. The topic of the presentation should be related to physics and your studies. When writing an abstract, you can be inspired by the traditional sections we discussed in Lesson 2.

The length of the abstract and bio is up to you, the usual word limits are 150-250 words for an abstract and 70-120 words for a bio (either in sentences or in points).

Please write all parts in one document and upload it into Odevzdávárna

3 ORGANIZING A CONFERENCE

HW - complete the missing parts of sentences in a summary about an abstract - ex. 12

Homework from week IV

Self-assessment/reflection - upload your reflection into odevzdávárna by May 10.

In this writing task you will give your examiner your total score and write a reflection on your learning based on this test result. You can also outline your strengths and weaknesses in the English language based on these test scores in each part of the online test as well as your strategy and aims for future development in this area. The minimum length is 250 words.

For more information on how to do this writing task, see the guidelines below:

Reflection is a serious thought or consideration. It has nothing to do with how much you know or don’t know, or whether you are correct or not correct. The point of your reflection is to put into writing the process of how you have learned English. In your reflection you can also discuss some of the following questions:

·         Based on your test results, what are your strengths and weaknesses in English?

·         What would you like to tell us, as your teachers, about the test itself?

How were you preparing for the test and would you do something differently next time?

·         How has your English improved recently and why?

·         Why is English important to you?

·         What do you plan to do in the future to improve your English?

·         Now that you have a few months’ experience as an online learner, would you want to do this again?

·         What do you think we can all learn from contactless teaching?
