XD107 Seminar of Ph.D. Chemistry studies ‐ Ph.D. Student Conference 
 
The seminar XD107 is held as a student conference scheduled in the examination term at the 
end of each semester.  
 
The Fall 2021 Conference XD107 is planned for Thursday, February 10, 2022 in B11 – 132. 
Students interested in presenting should send an abstract to jpinkas@chemi.muni.cz.  
 
The conference consists of lectures and poster presentations. The scientific quality of 
lectures and posters, English language proficiency, and presentation skills are assessed by a 
panel composed of chairs of doctoral committees and other experts. 
 
General hints about the preparation of presentations 
In preparation to your oral presentations, please bear in mind that the lectures are directed 
to a diverse audience of students and teachers from different areas of chemistry; therefore, 
the presentation should be constructed with the emphasis on this aspect rather than 
dwelling on minuscule details. Try to show a broader context of the work, connection to the 
state‐of‐the‐art in a respective field, and your motivation to solve a particular problem. In 
the presentation of your results, you should point out an advancement your work achieved 
in the field and also clearly establish your specific contribution as an author. Prepare 
carefully for the discussion after concluding your lecture. As an expert in your field, you 
should not restore to an answer: I don’t know. You must know all bits and pieces of your 
work. Another important task for you as a member of the audience is to listen carefully, 
think about the content and ask questions and debate the presented results. Discussion is an 
integral part of scientific communication and your education. 
 
The rules for the XD107 course 
 
Registration for the XD107 course in IS MU in each semester and attendance at the 
conference is compulsory for all doctoral students in the present (full‐time) form of study 
during the actual length of study (i.e., in each semester after the end of the standard length 
of studies of 4 years). 
 
For doctoral students in the combined form of study, registration for the XD107 course is 
compulsory during the standard study period (i.e., the first 4 years). Presentations of 2 
posters and the lecture before the dissertation defense are compulsory. 
 
Semesters, when a student is at an international stay abroad, are excluded. A student does 
not register for the XD107 course in IS MU for that semester and sends this information to 
me. 
 
In justifiable cases, a student can present one poster and a lecture during one conference. It 
is necessary to inform me ahead of the conference about the reason. 
 
Students wishing to present their lecture or posters will send a one‐page abstract to me one 
month before the end of a semester in which they want to present. 
During the actual time of doctoral studies, a student has to present two posters in English on 
the progress of his/her dissertation work. The posters are usually presented starting the 
third semester of doctoral studies. Posters that were prepared for presentations at domestic 
or international conferences in the preceding or following semesters could be used for the 
XD107 conference. The poster content and student performance will be assessed in a 
discussion with a panel composed of chairs of doctoral committees and other experts. If the 
poster fails the committee approval, it has to be improved and presented in the following 
semester.  
A student wishing to submit his/her thesis for defense has to deliver one lecture in English 
that summarizes the results of his/her dissertation; this lecture should usually be presented 
in the semester prior to the thesis defense. The lecture summarizing major findings of the 
doctoral research work should be prepared for 20 minutes with 10 min left for questions and 
discussion. The lecture will be assessed by a panel composed of chairs of doctoral 
committees and other experts. If the lecture fails the committee approval, it has to be 
repeated in the following semester. That may result in a thesis defense delay.
