Human suffering is, unfortunately, a universal experience that transcends race, gender, class, age, and many other identities, including one’s culture and country of origin. Yet, how different countries define and respond to social issues that contribute to such suffering varies dramatically depending on how various disciplines and countries conceptualize the problems and develop prevention and intervention strategies and resources to address such issues across multiple levels of society. Social workers, psychologists, nurses, and other helping disciplines are particularly well-equipped to handle social problems across organizations due to their education and training to understand and intervene in issues that impact individuals, groups, and communities. This course will introduce students to how various helping professionals from different countries and disciplines address social problems and will be taught by an international team of professionals from other fields to explore and understand social issues that directly and indirectly impact human suffering across the globe.

This course will combine asynchronous learning modules and in-person learning at TRC and will include a mixture of in-class sessions (with topics on child and adolescent wellbeing, Family and aging services, and substance use disorder) and field trips around Rome. It will also include local experts coming to the class and speaking about the various identified class topics. In this course, students will: 1/ Describe international and interdisciplinary approaches to resolving social issues 2/ Differentiate how different countries practice their disciplines 3/ Design a self-designed project aimed at addressing a social issue within their communities
