The Objective

The objective of this course is to prepare students to succeed in the JA001 exam. The information about the exam is available here

https://www.sci.muni.cz/o-nas/organizacni-struktura/oddeleni-centra-jazykoveho-vzdelavani-na-prirodovedecke-fakulte/zkousky

In order to achieve this objective, the course will develop all language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing). In addition, students will be introduced to enhanced academic vocabulary and science vocabulary related to Biology and Life Science at the B1 level. Students will also be required to give academic presentations related to their fields of interests.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be familiar with science vocabulary and concepts. They will be able to speak about various topics related to biological study. They will also be able to use various language functions, eg. comparing and contrasting, describing a process, classifying. They will be able to give a presentation and engage in discussions.

In the course, grammar specific to science will be addressed. Students will improve their listening skills through various recordings associated with science and related topics. Students will learn how to write emails and other writing formats necessary for their communication at the university level. Students will be able to read and understand texts related to Biology and Life Science.

Materials

All materials will be in the IS. Students are expected to bring the handouts in the class for each lesson in print or electronic form.

Online Revision Exercices

Optional exercices for those who want to revise what we have done in the class.

Credit Requirements

  1. Class attendance and active participation. Students can miss max 2 seminars during the whole semester.
  2. Presentation on a controversial topic. The presentation will be delivered by two students - each student will speak for about 5-7 minutes. One student will focus on positive aspects of the controversial topic (eg euthanasia) and the second student on the drawbacks. The students will prepare one activity for their audience which will follow their presentations (questions for a discussion, a quiz, a vocabulary game, ...). After the presentation, on the same day or next at the latest, each student will write me an email where they reply to these questions: What do you think about the presentation? What would you like to do differently next time? (it is enough if your email is just 2 sentences long). You will be given feedback in the IS from me.
  3. Credit Test at the end of the semester, you need 60 % to pass
