This course aims to provide students with skills necessary for their study in the program. Students will learn the basics of academic-writing skills. They will further learn how to read critically, how to formulate strong arguments, how to present their work, and how to form effective arguments in oral discussions. Skills acquired in this course will help students succeed in their academic work as well as in their future careers.

At the end of the course, students will
  • distinguish between different types of college writing assignments
  • know how search for academic sources and know how to avoid plagiarism
  • be able to critically evaluate argumentative texts and know how to formulate effective arguments of their own
  • be able to present their work and deliver oral arguments 
Evaluation
25% paper
25% poster
40% exam
10% attendance at seminars
 
Attendance note: there are five compulsory seminars: Weeks 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12. One unexcused absence is allowed. For each additional unexcused absence, 2% are deducted from the final score.
The final exam will be held in the examination period. The exam will be held as an in-class assignment. Details will be announced in class.
